Meeting No 8 - 30 May 2015
Welcome to meeting No.8 of the eClub of Latitude 38.
Hi everyone,
The material for this week’s meeting is certainly diverse. The video about Australian Rotary Health (ARH) was a good refresher and introduction to this great organisation. I was especially taken by the story of Dr James Charles, researcher and podiatrist, the use of social media as a tool to talk about suicide and aid in its prevention and the contribution ARH has made to Mental Health First Aid. I liked the goal achieving cartoon but had to watch it twice since I was too busy watching the drawing instead of reading the messages the first time. The best for me though was the story of Oliver Percovich, a regular Aussie skateboarder who found a loophole in the social system in Afghanistan which has enabled him to link skateboarding to education and other social, economic and cultural changes. If you haven’t watched it I would encourage you to do so.
If you have any comments about the material posted for this week please share them – it lets us know that you are connected. Suggested topics or material is also welcome.
On in-house matters:
Ian and his wife Laurel are touring Cape York. We trust that they have a safe and happy adventure.
In response to my message last week I received 2 formal expressions of interest forms for membership which will go to the provisional board shortly. If you still haven’t submitted your form could you please do so by the June 6. We nearly have the requisite number to charter but I need those forms to demonstrate it. I would also encourage you to share this email and the website with anyone you know that would benefit from Rotary including past Rotarians and those who you know have an interest in working to make a difference in the lives of others.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Have a good week.
Cheers
Kerrie
G’day Brian and Kerrie
I’d forgotten that Rotary in Bermuda is part of New York – good to be reminded. The club sites were very “US”, and some were a bit dated so it would be interesting to learn if they all still exist. I thought the Australian Rotary Health presentation was very good. I would have been very helpful to those new to Rotary.
I thought the presentation by Oliver Percovich on skateboarding in Afghanistan was very special. The spontaneous ovations he periodically got said it all. I also liked the goal setting cartoon and appreciate why you used it at your RLI.
On Tuesday Laurel and I leave for a tour that goes as far as Cape York so will have to catch up with the next two meetings after we get back.
Regards and best wishes to all
Ian
